The stigma of self-made

Notes:

Havind said that about self-reliance, or reliance on things made by people instead of large corporations, we have a problem.

There is a bad stigma around “self-made” things. How could furniture from your home shop be better made than factory furniture? How could software written by hobbyists be better than that written by professionals?

Sometimes quality is obvious; sometimes it is not. We all know that quality in software is uncorrelated with it being free or proprietary.

Sometimes it takes an experienced person to distinguish good quality – someone who knows where to look for solid-wood joinery instead of cheap metal fasteners.
