Notes:

Acquiring skills – woodworking, gardening, cooking – lets you make things that you couldn't before.

You start by procuring the simplest technologies that will help you get started. If you start with the best-of-everything, most sophisticated things right away, they will try to impose a system onto your life for which you are not prepared.

Example: feeding a compost heap is much easier if you have *two* wastebaskets in your kitchen – one for vegetable/fruit scraps, and one for everything else. Otherwise you never have a place to put the compostable scraps.

(The workbench above is my woodworking bench, a 17th-century design that is quite excellent low-tech.)
